Fall Harvest

As you can see from the photos above, I’ve been extremely busy keeping up with the garden’s extensive produce. Right now our freezer is chock full of sauces, chilis and stewed tomatoes as well as abundance of beans and other garden goodness that I’ve processed throughout the summer. You would not believe the amount of food our little Potager produced! And it’s still coming! All kinds of peppers, eggplant, carrots, celery and tomatoes are still waiting to be harvested – I just don’t have a place to put it all! Overall I’d say the Potager/Companion planting experiment was a huge success and I’m already looking forward to next year’s gardening adventure!

The Snowdrift Marigolds certainly took their time to grow in the Potager, but once they finally arrived they were the *Bee’s Knees*:

Tomato Harvest

In one day I picked 24 pounds of tomatoes:





And I didn’t even put a dent in the crop! By the time the season is finished, our little vegetable garden will have yielded over 100 pounds of tomatoes.

Tomato Thieves

We introduced a new species of tomato to the vegetable garden this year that has caused a crack like addiction in our resident Red Squirrel and Chipmunk. Here they are getting their sugar high on with our Sun Gold:











I read a number of articles on tomato thieves and it appears not much can be done to deter these deviant rodents once they have gotten a taste for these sugar laden treats. Okay, so admittedly they are adorable, but not only can consume masses of tomatoes in a single sitting, they are also making a huge mess, leaving tomato skins and partially eaten tomatoes all over the place!

Zinnias

Zinnias are one of my all time favorite annuals. I love the full spectrum of bright vibrant colors and the way each blossom seems to develop its own character and personality as they age. Have a look at these distinctive individuals found growing alongside the driveway and in the front beds of the Potager:

Calendula

Here is a look at some of the Calendula currently in bloom in our vegetable garden:























Calendula is not only bright and cheerful, it’s also working double duty as a companion plant that is said to repel tomato hornworms and other insect pests.
