Here’s Tonka in his usual spot in the studio:

Looks like he’s resting his eyes a bit after some heavy reading.

Here’s Caden expressing some frustration over Tonka’s desire to help with his puzzle this morning:

What can I say? The cat’s a genius! :)

Here’s Tonka in his usual spot, under my feet:

He likes to laze around on the heated floors until he melts into a stupor. However, don’t mistake this adorable moment of idleness as his only characteristic: our Tonka is a cat of many hats. According to Caden our beloved fur ball has recently developed a new (rather undignified) side identity as: “The Flying Poopy Cat”. I won’t share the details here, but if you want to hear the biggest belly laugh going, ask Mr. C about Tonka’s latest escapade. Oh my… boys think the grossest things are funny.

Here are Caden and Tonka in the studio:

The boys like to sit next to me, torturing me with endless comments and suggestions as I work. I’m very slowly plugging away at the research and sketches for my long term project. You can probably imagine from seeing the mischievous look in Caden’s eyes and Tonka’s smirk of agreement what sort of art direction these two hellions came up with. Very naughty, and not at all helpful to my concentration levels, suddenly I’m beginning to recall why I haven’t attempted any *Serious Work* over the past 5 years. Wish me luck!

Today’s question for the ages is: What is your Personal Symbolism? Meaning, when people think of you, what do they connect your identity with? What would some of the symbols and iconography of your *caricature* entail? Are you a horse enthusiast? A sports fan? A music aficionado? A food connoisseur? What has been your lifelong *thing*? We all have them; it’s what makes us, well, US.
Here’s a historical (er, rather hysterical) perspective of me photographed with one of my personal symbols, CATS:

Throughout my life I have been notoriously camera shy, but apparently I become a bit braver when holding a cat! If all of these photos are in existence of me with my fabulous feline friends, then you can imagine how full of cats my life has been. For as long as I can remember, and despite the many canine friends I have had, I have been called a “Cat Woman”. One day I’ll probably be known as the crazy old witch with a house full of cats! Well, maybe not, but they have been my lifelong familiars. I connect with, relate to and understand cats on many levels. It could have something to do with the fact that I was born a Leo? Whatever the case, I adore cats. Whether they were strays, feral, barn cats or rescues, the wilder the better! There is no greater loyalty then the love and trust earned from the untamed feline heart.
It’s something to think about; identifying one’s own personal symbolism could ignite the true heart felt inspiration you’ve been seeking for your art endeavors.

Here are a few pictures from Christmas morning at our house:

Our Wii Family:

Tonka:

We decided to keep things simple for Christmas this year, giving Caden one *Big Gift* rather then lots of little stuff to open. He already has everything a five year old boy could possibly need, so obviously we had no choice but to go with something completely frivolous! The Wii games were something he had previously enjoyed playing at his cousin’s house, so we thought it would be an entertaining Christmas gift for the whole family (in essence giving the gift of family time). As you can see from his face above, he was absolutely thrilled with his Christmas present. Overall, beyond Caden receiving the *Big Gift*, many things contributed to making this Christmas time especially memorable. I think we even managed to instill the true ideals of the holiday season. Caden was able to experience and appreciate the joy of giving, sharing, and spending quality time with his family. He had a great time making crafts for others, such as the Grandparent Masterpieces, his hand drawn Christmas cards, and he participated in the numerous Christmas baking projects (including some fabulous sugar cookies that his Dad helped to decorate!). I think this year was extra special because we slowed things down, simplified and took the time to create many new Christmas traditions that were very personal and meaningful. In fact, even I, the self proclaimed Christmas Grinch, might be warming up to the holidays… Maybe. I hope you all are enjoying your holiday season!
