Worst Fashion Trends of the Aughties

I enjoyed About.com’s retrospective look at the "Worst Fashion Trends of the '00s". That’s pronounced “aughties”, in case you haven’t checked your Urban Dictionary lately.

The aughties are defined as “The decade from 2000 to 2009 – a play on the phrase ‘the eighties’ and the [Middle English] word aught, meaning ‘zero’.”

Anyway, I have a few reactions to the list of worst fashion trends from the last decade. In the opinion of the About.com writer, Cynthia Nellis, they were:

• Celebrity Designers – Personally I thought some were good; some not.

• Retro Overload – I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought, “Why would today’s women want to look like something out of Woodstock or the Brady Bunch?” Been there; done that.

• Ugly Shoes – Not just ugly, but downright dangerous: stiletto heels, platforms. Whenever women start wearing these contraptions, orthopedists’ income soars.

“It” Bags – Most (if not all) of the aughties “it” bags were BIG. I love big roomy bags that will hold everything I might conceivably need when I venture out. I’ll be sorry to see big “it” bags go. Maybe I’ll be a style rebel and keep using mine.

• Bimbo Style Icons – You remember trendsetters Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan? I’m so glad that’s over with!

• Middle-Age Teenagers – I couldn’t agree more.

To quote author Nellis, “TV shows like "The Real Housewives of Orange County/New York/New Jersey/Atlanta" showed older moms trying desperately to look younger by wearing tight, sexy clothes and the latest trends. The question of the decade became not whether you could still wear the same things teens did -- even 50-something Madonna had the body to wear anything -- but the question was should middle-age women even want to still dress like teens?”

My answer? A resounding “NO”.

Did you follow any of these trends? Come on, ‘fess up.
