P & G plans to extend its Olay product lines horizontally in expectation that consumers will continue seeking drugstore skin care bargains. The trend of choosing more affordable anti-aging skin care products may have been triggered by the poor economy, but it’s expected to last long after the recession’s end.
For consumers, the problem with horizontal line extension is that it becomes more difficult to select among similar products within a diversified brand with many lines like Olay. We now have Pro-X, Regenerist, Total Effects and Definity – to name just a few.
I took a look at two of Olay’s newer tinted moisturizers. Tinted moisturizers are great for when you’re in a rush or want minimal coverage. They’re especially nice when they come with added benefits.
The Definity product reviewed here promises to even and clarify skin tone over time. The Total Effects product promises to attack skin aging on seven fronts.
Looking at the formulations (ingredients, viscosity, shade options) can tell us even more about the similarities and differences in these two Olay products. You’ve probably heard a lot about Olay Definity Color Recapture because of the full page ads announcing that it was selected 2009’s Best New Product in a Better Homes and Gardens poll of 50,000 independent voters.
Tomorrow I’ll talk about Olay Total Effects Daily UV Moisturizer + Touch of Foundation and then compare the two tinted moisturizers.
