Beauty is NOT Only Skin Deep

Last month I reported extensively on the fascinating Cleveland Twin Sisters Study. While very convincing, the results weren’t very surprising. Poor lifestyle choices cause people to age more rapidly. The first part of the Cleveland study focused on facial aging.

The older-looking twin of each pair was more likely to have:

• smoked;
• had excessive sun exposure;
• drunk alcohol more heavily; and
• not had hormone replacement therapy.

In a follow-up of the twins seven years later, the older-looking one at the start was more likely to have died. Again, no great surprise. Poor lifestyle choices which show up on the face are just a reflection of what is going on inside.

Further, the researchers found that the younger-looking twins tended to have longer telomeres, which are pretty good indicators of cell aging. Telomere protection is the focus of much current anti-aging research.
