Barbara Morris’ Put Old on Hold April newsletter just arrived in my in-box. As usual, the newsletter has a lot of good advice for us Age Warriors. But I especially liked what Barbara has to say in “Retirement Living: La Dolce Vita?”
Barbara exhorts you to stay in the “real world” as you age, “connected to productive people who support your mindset and lifestyle. Do not buy into a senior community, join senior organizations, or participate exclusively in senior activities. Becoming part of the traditional senior culture is the number one reason healthy women age prematurely.”
As I read, I thought “Amen to that!” which is funny because at the end of the article Barbara asked, “Do I hear an ‘Amen’?”
I’ve said many times that, while part of how we age is beyond our control, much of how we age is not. The part that is within our control is a matter of the lifestyle choices we make.
Do not choose a sedentary retirement. Your body was not designed for it. Neither was your mind. In Barbara’s words, “Being productive after age sixty-five is not a form of punishment; it's a gift that promotes freedom and independence.”
