Help for Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation Related Scars

PIH ScarsHello,

I have a question regarding post inflammatory pigmentation, is there anything that can be done about skin that has been raised as a result of the pigmentation? The skin on the right side of my chin is raised in comparison to the left due to the inflammation left over.

I'm currently applying skin needling but was wondering of anything else can be done or taken naturally. The affected area is probably the size of golf ball.

Thanks,
Max

Hi Max,

First, stop what you’re doing. If what you describe is a hypertrophic or keloid scar, skin needling is not indicated. In fact, it may be doing more harm than good.

I’m not a doctor but here’s what I know. Skin needling, or running a roller studded with tiny sterilized needles over areas of skin, is intended to wound the surface and induce collagen production. Nowhere is it recommended for treating raised scars.

Raised scars are caused by overproduction of collagen in response to injury. The last thing you want to do is induce more collagen production in the area of a PIH raised scar. As far as I know, there is no home treatment for raised scars. However, don’t despair, there is help for you.

You need to consult a plastic surgeon or dermatologist for evaluation and appropriate treatment. It’s essential to know whether your scar is a hypertrophic scar or a keloid.
