[Dru’s letter appeared yesterday.]
Hi Dru,
No apology necessary. I hope I can help.
While it’s fine to try a new OTC topical treatment in the interim, I’m glad you’ve scheduled an appointment with your dermatologist.
In order to treat any skin condition, it’s essential to understand the cause(s). You mention some medical considerations (suspected thyroid issues, one bag being larger). You also say you can’t tell whether the bags are caused by edema, localized fat build-up or blood. A doctor can tell you these things.
The skin sometimes exhibits the first signs of something more serious happening in the body. Since your thyroid function has been tested, your previous doctor has already ruled out Grave’s disease. Eye bags can also be a sign of kidney problems. You might be allergic to something like a down pillow you’re sleeping on or an eye cream you put on before bed.
Once you’ve ruled out possible underlying medical conditions like allergies or kidney disease, ask your dermatologist whether your dark circles and bags are due to:
1. Fluid retention;
2. Melanin aggregation;
3. Thinning skin which allows blood to show through; and/or
4. Genetics.
Come back Monday for the rest of Jean’s Advice to Dru. Tomorrow is Shopping Day at the Ageless Beauty blog.
