Here is the current state of our Vegetable Garden:
While I think this year’s garden turned out fairly adorable, it hasn’t quite yielded the crop we had hoped for. Not much could have been done about the terrible weather we’ve had this summer so much of that damage was beyond our control. In addition the animals have eaten more then their fair share of what vegetables have come to fruition. A fence may have to happen next season. My natural pest deterrent plants; the Mexican Sunflowers (never came into it) and the Zinnias (late due to slug damage and reseeding) were ineffectual this year. The deer and groundhogs demolished most of the Basil, Chives and Cilantro along with some Tomato, Green Bean and Green Pepper plants. However, we were able to enjoy enough herbs to season quite a few dishes and we have had such an abundance of Zucchini and Cucumbers it (almost) balances out the loss. The Tomatoes, Green Peppers and Eggplants are still coming along slowly; so if the weather continues as it has the past week, we should be able to pick some of those veggies soon. Gardening is always a gamble but there really is nothing like harvesting fresh food from your own backyard.
Here is what the Vegetable Garden looked like in June.
